Lapa Rios

Lapa Rios is the absolute best place if you want to see rainforest wildlife. From the moment we arrived we began to see things. The staff are all very friendly and knowledgeable. The site is a 1000 acre nature preserve that backs up to the 10,000 (?) acre Corcovado national park preserve. The hikes through the rainforest were awesome. Streams and rivers with waterfalls everywhere. This is no place to go if you are not in shape. There are 300 stair steps from the rooms to the lodge where each of the outstanding meals are served. We saw monkeys and birds during every meal and were treated with local artisans several times. The lodge is a model of sustainability and it was very interesting to see how it all worked. Water is all sourced from rain. All trash is recycled and the food scraps (not many as the food was so good) are fed to pigs who generate methane gas which is collected and used for water heating and cooking. They really do have an elaborate system. All done in a five star fashion. We’ve definitely put this place on our list of places to return to some day. And highly recommend for those who are in shape and are not afraid of bugs and animals.
