Jump the Shark

Have you ever heard of the term “Jump the Shark”? I never heard of it. Somebody used it in a sentence and I got totally confused. They were shocked that I did not know it. They said that “our parts supplier had jumped the shark”.

Jumped the shark means that something is past its prime and they are doing something to get attention to try and stay relevant. In other words the parts supplier was old and going downhill, and they had done some promotion to try and get customers back, but it was too late.

When I got home I did some research and found out that it refers to Happy Days (the TV show). When the show was past its prime they had an episode where Fonzi jumped a shark to try and create some buzz about the show and get its viewers back. Pretty funny stuff. He’s wearing his leather jacket with the swim trunks as he water skiis.
